Bagel Wars NYC because New York City is the bagel capital of the world. In the early 1900’s the Lower East Side had over 100 bagel stores, today they have one. The bagel makers at the turn of the century were so large and organized, they had their own union. We still have many goods ones, but here are the truly great ones.
If you live, work, or visit the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Greenwich Village or Chelsea, you’re lucky to have one of the best bagel shops within your grasp. I’ve narrowed down all the contenders to only 3, but the remaining three were so good, there was no distinct winner, so I called it a dead-heat. Here are the winners of the coveted Best Bagel award.
Traditional techniques with the highest quality ingredients available, tastes like you’re biting into heaven. Large supply of customers all day, usually guarantees a warm or hot one. Bonus, also makes a great chocolate pudding too! 500 6th Ave, bet. 12-13 Streets. 242 8th Ave, bet. 22-23 Streets.
This is my hands down winner on the Upper West Side. A real hole in the wall, but the bagel has a crunchy exterior yielding to a pillowy interior. 2788 Broadway, bet. 107-108 Streets.
H & H Bagels East
Not to be confused with H & H Bagels West, which had to close both locations due to the Tax Man. They’re fluffy with the perfect glossy crust that’s not to hard. 1551 2nd Ave, bet. 80-81 Streets.
Great shop in Greenwich Village, bagels are correctly boiled first then baked. Located on a beautiful street, you might get lucky and nail the bench outside. 502 Hudson Street, corner Christopher St.
Two honorable mentions in Brooklyn and Queens
Bagel Oasis, Flushing
Bagel Hole, Park Slope
