There are probably more but 10 covered most reasons. If youre planning your vacation now and New York is one of the options, to help you get in the mood, think of Frank Sinatra, or Liza Minnelli singing New York, New York. If you love food, theatre, shopping, and museums, then New York is waiting for you.
Here are my 10 reasons to take a walking food tour in New York City;
1) The Weather
New York has 4 seasons so pick the one you feel at home in. If you love it cold like your beer, please visit from December through March. Spring and Fall the temperatures are in the 60s and 70s. And some do like it hot, so make your plans for the Summer season.
2) People Watching
Not only do we have a mass of people in this the biggest of all U. S. cities with over 8 million human beings, and we are the capital of the fashion industry. Beautiful looking people dressing in the latest fashions, or in their own unique style of dress. Sit at an outdoor cafe, and watch the show.
3) Only in New York
Visit Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village and youll hear some excellent music. Everything from solo piano concerts, to 5 piece jazz bands playing alfresco for tips. One time I spotted a Billy Joel impersonator, singing New York State of Mind.
4) Take a Walk
The best way to see the city is on your 2 feet. Walk by Lombardis Pizzeria in Nolita and you can smell that wonderful pizza clear out on the sidewalk.
5) The Food
Make sure you try some of the iconic foods New York is known for like bagels. Hudson Bagels in Greenwich Village, makes their own cream cheese. Or Murry’s Bagels in Chelsea.
One of my favorites is in Chinatown, it sells only 1 item, pork dumplings, always fresh, with a line to prove it. Dont forget to look for the Health Dept. ratings on doors/windows; A is the cleanest, B means some minor violations, C means proceed at your own caution. No letter grade, run as fast as your can.
7) Food Shops
In Little Italy theres Alleva, the oldest cheese shop in America. Its a small shop where the owner waits on customers, giving it that old time feel. The cheese is to die for! Don’t forget the cold cuts too!
8) Famous Buildings
From SoHo you can see the new World Trade Center, a beautiful modern building which opens in Fall 2015. Or the residential building entrance shot used on the Friends Show in Greenwich Village.
9) Famous People
A lot of celebrities live and work in New York City. At one shop in SoHo I saw Clive Owen, and minutes later, Harvey Keitel. Like most New Yorkers I checked them out discreetly, and gave them their privacy.
10) Native New Yorker Tour Guide
My name is Bruce Scher, I am the owner and licensed tour guide of www.WalkingToursManhattan.com I confess I am a foodie, and run to new openings of shops and restaurants, to make my food tours the best tasting ones you can find.
